During the era of the Underground Railroad, many freedom seekers traveled under the cover of darkness. In some documented accounts, lanterns or lights marked places of refuge or helped travelers find their way.
During Windsor's annual Freedom Trail Run and Walking Tour, participants carry the symbolic lantern along the Freedom Trail route before passing it to another. As the lantern passes from hand to hand, it symbolizes the courage, determination, and resilience of freedom seekers who embarked on their journey toward freedom, while honoring the many individuals whose acts of courage, compassion, and sacrifice helped light the way along the freedom journey.
